Pioneering Biodiversity Conservation Amid Major Oil Projects in the Albertine Region

TotalEnergies Uganda is executing two significant oil projects, Tilenga and EACOP, in the biodiversity-rich North Albertine region, home to iconic species like the Nubian giraffe and Eastern chimpanzee. The company prioritizes biodiversity protection through a landscape-based approach, launching its Biodiversity Program in June 2022 to achieve a Net Positive Impact (NPI) and ensure better preservation of the Murchison Falls Protected Area. Key partnerships with the Ministry of Water and Environment and the National Forestry Authority aim to restore wetlands and conserve forests. Initiatives include a Patrol Effectiveness Program for Budongo and conservation education through Chimpanzee Trust. Future plans involve enhancing park management, developing a Regional Cumulative Impacts Management Framework, and establishing a visitor center in the Tilenga area to promote awareness of biodiversity and conservation efforts
