Building local capacity in the oil and gas sector

THE ROLE OF IEC IN THE OIL & GAS SECTOR(TIER 1 FGD’S)

The Industry Enhancement Centre (IEC) is a groundbreaking
industry-led initiative that has been established to prioritize and
support Ugandan businesses, enabling them to seize opportunities
and thrive in the competitive market. The primary goal is to ensure
that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Uganda are
equipped to actively participate in the Oil and Gas sector. This will
be implemented through a vetting process and a collaborative
approach, companies are identified and supported in their
endeavors. Key initiatives outlined by the IEC include supply and
development programs, along with networking sessions geared
towards enhancing member participation. The benefits for
participating businesses are vast, ranging from access to valuable
information to comprehensive business advisory and financial
analysis services. The workshop and training programs offered by
the IEC not only serve as a gateway for participants to acquire new
knowledge but also create an environment of sharing and learning.
The focus is on addressing the various challenges and
opportunities faced within the industry and collectively finding
effective ways to manage them. A notable aspect of the IEC’s
efforts is the diversification of its participant base, particularly the
inclusion of women-led SMEs. This commitment to inclusivity is
praiseworthy and demonstrates an earnest effort to ensure that all
voices are heard. One of the key discussions taking place within
the IEC framework revolves around sourcing suppliers as a tier
one contractor, the positive aspects of working on projects, and
strategies to enhance positive experiences while mitigating the
negative ones. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on
understanding the intricacies of the oil and gas sector, identifying
opportunities, and navigating the associated challenges that come
with this industry, particularly when working with suppliers and
SMEs. The IEC’s focus on capacity building is commendable, with
planned national database compilations and a series of upcoming
trainings scheduled for July and August. Engagement with
stakeholders at all levels, including local communities, is
recognized as essential for bridging the gap between major
industry players and local SMEs. Furthermore, the IEC’s
encouragement for tier one participants to intentionally collaborate
with other contractors and suppliers demonstrates a proactive
approach towards fostering a more cohesive and supportive

business environment. Challenges such as logistics and the need
for an extensive supplier database are being addressed with a
proactive mindset. The focus is on nurturing local talent, ensuring
compliance with regulations, and maintaining high standards of
quality and performance in all operations. The IEC’s
efforts have not gone unnoticed, with positive feedback from SMEs
and stakeholders enriching the ongoing discussions. The
seamless integration and dissemination of information to SMEs is
vital for their growth and development. Furthermore, the proposal
for joint ventures among companies to strengthen their financial
capabilities and undertake larger contracts is a notable suggestion
that could further boost the growth of businesses in the region. In
conclusion, the Industry Enhancement Centre’s tireless dedication
to empowering Ugandan businesses in the Oil and Gas sector is
commendable. Through strategic collaborations, capacity building,
and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity, the IEC is paving the
way for a more prosperous and vibrant business landscape in
Uganda.
